Bambini Nabs NEFWA Gold Helmet Award
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Maine junior defensive end Michael Cole and Curry College senior wide receiver Rob Bambini have been chosen as the New England Football Writers’ Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award winners for the week of Oct. 8.

Cole tallied five of the Black Bears’ nine sacks for a loss of 41 yards, nine total tackles and one forced fumble to help the Maine rout 15th-ranked Delaware on the road, 26-3, Saturday. The New Jersey-native, who is currently tops in the country with seven sacks this season and ranks in the top-30 in tackles-for-loss, also added The Sports Network National Co-Defensive Player of the Week, Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week and National Defensive Lineman of the Week honors to his resume this week.

While Cole stymied the Blue Hens’ offense, Bambini’s heroics in the final 15 minutes of play helped lift Curry over Western New England, 35-32. The former Westwood High School standout caught two 39-yard touchdown passes, including the game-winner with one second left in regulation, in the fourth quarter. Bambini also notched two touchdowns in the first half as part 177- yard, 14-reception performance that helped him establish career records for receiving yards (2,537) receptions (181) and touchdown catches (32) and earn NEFC Offensive Player of the Week.
