Fall 2011 Sports Previews

MILTON, Mass. - All six Curry College fall sports teams are gearing up for their 2011 campaigns:

Football is coming off its 13th-consecutive winning season, including six New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division titles and five NEFC Championships over the last eight years. Over the past 13 seasons, Curry has compiled an impressive 111 wins to go with only 33 losses. With over 100 student-athletes arriving on campus on August 13 for pre-season camp, the Colonels expect to be as competitive and successful as ever.  The team opens up the 2011 season on the road Friday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. against Division II Stonehill College, before heading home vs. Fitchburg State for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Friday, September 9.

Women’s Soccer has an exciting freshman class and strong returning players, and is looking to build on the success of past seasons. Once again, the team’s goal for the season is winning a conference championship. Leading the way will be all-conference performer and team captain Suzie Jensen. Jensen is excited and ready to run the center of the field. The confidence displayed by starting keeper Sam Hardy is another key factor in producing a winning season. Head Coach Danielle Ferrara Toomey believes that her team is eager and up to the challenge of a tough game schedule. Each season brings new challenges and the team is ready to get started and make their mark in 2011.

Men’s Soccer has brought in the largest and most talented recruiting class in school history, according to fifth-year Head Coach Peter Mendel. Looking to build upon their recent trip to Italy, the Colonels have a rigorous schedule with top New England foes in hopes of preparing themselves for a run at the 2011 CCC title. An early season tournament in New Jersey will test the group, but with veteran leadership from senior defender Mike Griffin among others, as well as a hungry group of young talent, the 2011 men’s soccer squad will be balanced and ready to have a successful campaign.

Women's Cross Country opens its season on September 10 at the Mass. Maritime Invitational. Second-year Head Coach Jennifer Pearce will take her team to five total meets before heading to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships, hosted by Roger Williams at Colt State Park. Pearce hopes to guide the Colonels to a higher level of competitiveness this year within the conference. Her young squad hopes to build on last year's success, placing higher at the CCC Championships and continuing to post top program times. Curry will be led by senior captain and two-year team veteran Kelly Johnson.

Women’s Tennis is coming off a very good year in 2010, posting winning overall and conference records. Head Coach Richard Murray returns for his fourth season after earning conference Coach of the Year honors a year ago. The Colonels will be led by co-captains Kathleen Rush and Kate Johnson. All-Conference performers Megan Mulrooney (First Team Singles), Lauren Chuha  (Second Team Doubles) and Emily Mongello (Second Team Doubles) are among the squad’s seven returning players. They will be joined by five talented freshmen. Coach Murray also welcomes new Assistant Coach Lindsey Herchel, a 2011 graduate of Stonehill College who captained the Skyhawks’ women's tennis team.

Women’s Volleyball is aiming for new heights in 2011 after its historic first year as a varsity program in 2010. Second-year Head Coach Roberta Stannard believes that her first-year squad succeeded in building the foundation for a strong collegiate program. This season, Curry will tackle a full conference schedule for the first time. The Colonels will be playing 22 matches of very competitive volleyball throughout New England. Eleven returning players and seven new recruits will all compete this pre-season for spots on Coach Stannard’s roster. This strong core of veterans and talented recruits will continue to set the tone of hard work, perseverance and developing a competitive edge.
