Cheerleading Claims Intermediate Division III NCA National Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Curry College cheerleading team took home the 2019 Intermediate All-Girl Division III National Championship from the National Cheerleading Association for the first time in program history.

The team competed in the Intermediate All-Girl Division III with 13 teams. On day one, they landed in second place with a score of 94.73, hitting a clean routine. They knew they needed to give every ounce of themselves in order to take that top spot away from the team in first. Day two, they brought it all and hit an even cleaner routine. It was a close score but the team took home the coveted title of a Collegiate Champion.

The moment the placements kept getting announced was indescribable. When they said the top two teams are two-tenths of a point away from each other, the crowd gasped. The moment they said started saying the first letter for Iowa everyone burst into tears and the crowd screamed for us. Framingham State University and Bridgewater State University cheered them on and took pictures. This is the highest title to earn for a college cheer team.

The journey it takes to even get to College Nationals is long and requires extreme amounts of training, discipline, and time management. The team holds tryouts in April every year, attends summer practices, and attends the NCA/NDA college camp, which is where they receive their bid to attend the collegiate national championship. Camp is a small competition in itself. The ladies return to school and cheer at home and away football games and home basketball games. They fundraise or pay entirely out of pocket for this trip. They are so very thankful for the generous donation from SGA. The team members practice over winter break, and only take a half of a spring break, and practice many hours during that time to allow for perfecting of their routine. The goal for us is to always hit our routine both days at Nationals and this year was their year.
