Baseball Closes Spring Break Strong

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Curry College baseball team wrapped up their Spring Break trip to Auburndale, Fla. with a pair of victories over Medaille College. With the wins, the Colonels improve to 7-2, while the Mavericks drop to 1-5.

Game One: Curry 10, Medaille 3

The Mavericks got on the board first, as a third inning error with the bases loaded allowed Robert Caraballo (Bronx, N.Y.) to cross the plate with the game's first run. A pair of batters later, a single by Shawn Filas (Hamburg, N.Y.) brought two more runs across the plate, as Medaille grabbed an early 3-0 lead. After collecting four hits in the first four innings, the Colonels finally stopped the shutout in the fifth, as Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) doubled to score Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.). In the following inning, a pair of hits, a walk, and an error brought three runs across the plate for Curry, giving them a 4-3 edge. The Colonels' bats stayed hot in the seventh, as the team scored six more runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Matt Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.). In the bottom half of the inning, Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) surrendered a lead-off single, but the Mavericks failed to make it count, as the junior induced three straight outs to wrap up his complete game victory.

Keller (4-for-5) and Leonard (3-for-5) each turned in 3+ hits for the Colonels, while the latter tacked on 3 RBI. Jones accounted for six runs; driving in four and scoring a pair. No Maverick collected more than one hit, but Filas drove in two runs. Despite a rough third inning, Wensley (2-0) pitched masterfully and earned the win, striking out ten batters over a complete game performance which saw just 99 pitches. Derek Holtz (Akron, N.Y., 0-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs on four hits in an inning of work.

Game Two: Curry 9, Medaille 7

As game two got underway, it would be Curry this time who struck first with a trio of runs in the third. After loading the bases with just one out, the Colonels capitalized with a fielder's choice and a pair of hits, capped by an RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Jhonathan Oliveira (Peabody, Mass.). The Mavericks struck back in the fourth, however, racking up four runs on six hits to take a one-run lead. After Medaille tacked on two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-3, a double by Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) pushed a run across for Curry to cut the lead back down to two. The Mavericks regained the run in the sixth, though, as Filas scored on an error which would have ended the frame. With just six outs remaining, the Colonels were far from defeated, despite trailing 7-4. Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) kicked off the bottom of the sixth inning by legging out a triple before Keller added a base-runner by taking one on the arm. Leonard cut the lead to one with one swing, as he drove both runners home with a double. Following a pitching change, Leonard, the tying run, moved up to third on a John Trevino (Edinburg, Texas) single. A batter later, Ketterer knotted the game at seven with an RBI single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with just one out and the Colonels got a little lucky, as an errant throw following a caught pop up brought another run home. With a runner on third and two down, Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) capped the inning by driving in the team's fifth run of the frame, giving Curry a 9-7 lead. In the seventh, Phillip Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.) returned to the mound for his third inning of work and downed the Mavericks 1-2-3 to close the contest.

Ketterer was a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, driving in three runs and scoring one of his own. Leonard scored two runs and drove in two, going 2-for-3. With hits in both games, Leonard has recorded a hit in all nine games this season, stretching his hit streak to 17 games through the end of the 2019 season. Timothy Gaudioso (Fairport, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 for Medaille in the loss, scoring a pair of runs. Despite not surrendering any earned runs, Filas (0-1) carries the loss, giving up two unearned scores on three hits in one inning of action. Ledwith (1-0) earns the win, striking out one and allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits over two-and-a-third.

Following the game, the Colonels' season closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mavericks completed one more contest, a March 13 loss to Husson, before their season too was cut short.
