MILTON, Mass. - Curry College fell to visiting Suffolk University 8-6 in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon in Milton.
The Colonels fall to 5-9 overall and will host conference rival Endicott College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2nd starting at noon.
The Rams improve to 13-4 on the season with the win and will travel to Lasell College for a conference doubleheader, also on Saturday afternoon.
Curry jumped out to an early two run lead in the bottom of the first inning with junior Nick Crivello (Blackstone, Mass.) doubling in both senior John Arens (Milton, Ma.) and freshman Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who singled and hit by a pitch respectively.
Suffolk responded in the following half inning with one swing of the bat of freshman Jake Frasca (Darien, Conn.) who hit a homerun to left field putting the score at 2-1. Junior Matt Brenner (Elliot, Maine) tied the score with a homerun of his own in following visiting half inning.
Arens got things started in the home half of the inning with a double to right field and was followed by a walk of junior Alex McLean (Elliot, Maine) to put the first two runners on. Both runners advanced on a pass ball during senior Phil Perez's (West Covina, Calif.) at bat where he later drew a walk to load the bases for Jenkins. The freshman supplied a sacrifice fly to score Arens and Crivello followed by reaching on an error to score McLean to take a two run lead by a score of 4-2 after three full.
In the next half inning, senior Jon Lapolla (Providence, R.I.) doubled to start things but got caught too far off second base on Frasca's fielder choice and was erased. Frasca advanced on senior Drew Carter's (Newburyport, Mass.) walk to put runners on first and second. Junior Luke Ronchi (Randolph, N.J.) doubled in Frasca to cut the lead in half but the Curry starter, senior Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) got out of the inning keeping the score at 4-3.
Another run finally was finally put up on the board in the top of the seventh when sophomore Seth Coiley (Arlington, Mass.) homered in classmate Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.) who singled at the beginning of the inning. The Rams took the lead, if only by a slim margin going into the bottom of the seventh.
Arens led off the inning with a double again and advanced on a pass ball during Perez's at bat where he eventually went down swinging. Jenkins came up and supplied a pop fly that was dropped by the right fielder which platted Arens, tying the game up again.
Carter responded right away, leading off the top of the eighth with a homerun to left field to retake the lead for Suffolk.
After two quick outs in the next half inning, Arens supplied a single and advanced to second on McLean's walk. Both would advance two bases on a pass ball in an eventual walk for Perez, tying up the game at six apiece heading into the final inning.
Chant started the inning with a walk and was sacrifice bunted over by senior Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.) to bring up junior Kevin Belskie (Norristown, Pa.) who grounded out to the right side to put Chant on third. Chant would go on to score on a pass ball during Lapolla's at bat where he went on to single himself on. Frasca followed with a single of his own to bring up Carter who delivered an insurance RBI single to left field to put the score at the eventual final score of 8-6.
Despite starting the game and going six and two-thirds innings, Connors did not factor into the decision after five earned runs on 11 hits and seven strikeouts. Junior Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) got pinned with the loss finishing two-thirds innings allowing three hits and two runs, one of them earned.
Frasca earned the win for the Rams, going one and a third allowing a hit and an unearned run while striking out a batter. Senior Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) picked up his third save on the season pitching a full inning, striking out a pair.
