MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated visiting Bridgewater State University 8-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon in Milton.
The Colonels improve to 13-6 overall and are set to host Rhode Island College Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 5-14 on the season. Bridgewater will travel to UMass Dartmouth at 6:30 Thursday evening for another non-conference matchup.
It wasn't until the top of the second inning when the 0-0 tie was broken. Junior Jacob Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) drove in senior Nick White (Bellingham, Mass.), who had singled on his own to left field.
The Bears got another run in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly from White driving in junior Scott O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) making the score 2-0 after two and a half.
No runs would be recorded until the bottom of the fifth when junior Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) doubled to left field scoring senior Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) who reached on an infield hit.
Curry would get things going again in the following inning, when sophomore Nick Crivello (Blackstone, Mass.) doubled down the left field line scoring freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.), who singled to right earlier in the frame. After six full, the score was tied at two.
After the Colonels held Bridgewater scoreless again, they got three of their own, with senior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) clearing the bases with a double to right field. Morris, McLean and Connors all scored unearned runs after sophomore Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) and Connors were both hit and Morris reached on a fielder's choice.
Curry would only give up a single hit and no runs in the top of the eighth and would come back and tack on three more insurance runs. Pizarro singled in senior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) who walked and stole second during Pizarro's at-bat. Connors would also drive in a run with a ground out to the second baseman plating freshman Will De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) who was hit by a pitch. Freshman Anthony Sciaudone (York, Maine) singled to left field and would later score on a wild pitch during McLean's at- bat.
Senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) came on to close out the game at the 8-2 final. McLean would get the win after going six full giving up the Bears' only two runs of the game.
