BABSON PARK, Mass. — Junior Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as part of a three-run eighth inning as visiting Curry College rallied to defeat Babson College, 3-1, in non-conference baseball action at Govoni Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Curry, which was playing just its second game since March 12, is now 7-5 on the year, while Babson drops to 10-9 overall.
Sophomore Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) doubled and finished with three of the Colonels four hits on the afternoon. Sophomore Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) also had a hit, while first-year William De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) had one RBI.
Junior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Beavers. Sophomore Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and senior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.), who scored the team's lone run, both doubled in the loss.
After four scoreless innings, Babson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. MacPhee cracked a one-out double to left and came around to score on a single by Crowley. Babson had opportunities to extend its lead, but left two runners on base in each of the next three innings, leaving the door open for Curry.
The Colonels, who had stranded a pair of runners in both the fifth and sixth innings, scored three times without the benefit of a hit in the eighth. First-year Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.) and Perez both walked to start the frame, and then moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Crivello walked to load the bases, and both Morris and Perez raced home on consecutive wild pitches to give Curry a 2-1 lead. Crivello would score two batters later on an RBI groundout by De La Cruz to make it 3-1.
Senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.), who worked out of a jam in the eighth, retired the side in order to earn the victory for the Colonels.
First-year Brett Ender (Skillman, N.J.), who walked three and allowed two earned runs in 0.2 innings suffered the loss for the Beavers. Classmate Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) recorded his second consecutive quality start, allowing just four hits while striking out five and walking two over seven innings.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts UMass-Boston at 3:30 p.m., while Curry hosts Eastern Nazarene in a conference double on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. (Recap courtesy of Babson Sports Info)
