AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team erased an early 6-1 deficit to beat the Colonels of Curry College, 15-9 at the Lake Myrtle complex on Monday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-2 and will resume play on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Bowdoin. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. at field five of the Chain of Lakes complex. The Colonels fall to 3-4 and will play Cairn tomorrow at 9:30 am at the Chain of Lakes complex.
Curry struck for six runs in its first at bat, benefiting from a pair of Colby-Sawyer miscues. Tim Lathrop had a single, a run and a RBI in the inning. Philip Perez knocked in a run with a double to left center.
Colby-Sawyer got one run back in the bottom of the first on a RBI fielder's choice from Rob Wallace.
The Chargers then erased the entire deficit in the second inning with five runs to even the game at 6-6. Nathan Frongillo had a two-run double, while Wallace and Vinny Monahan had RBI singles.
Perez gave the lead back to the Colonels with his second RBI hit in as many at-bats forcing a pitching change by the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer's Lucas Edwards again brought the Chargers even at 7-7 with a run scoring single to center in the fourth.
Curry scored one in the fifth and Colby-Sawyer knotted the game for a third time in the sixth.
A four-run seventh inning gave the Chargers their first lead of the game. Colby-Sawyer recorded four hits and benefited from three Curry errors.
The Colonels would get one back in the eighth, but Colby-Sawyer added three more in the bottom half en route to the 15-9 victory.
Vinny Monahan went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a game best five runs scored to lead the Chargers. Nathan Frongillo was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Alex Fredette also scored three times.
Curry had five players with two hits in the game. Philip Perez was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI. Tim Lathrop also was 2-for-4 and had a team-high three runs scored.
Michael Fazio pitched the final 6 1/3 innings of the game and earned his first collegiate victory. He gave up five hits, one earned run and struck out four. Chris Smith took the loss for Curry. (Recap courtesy of CSC Sports Information)
