Women’s Volleyball Continues CCC Schedule in Bristol

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match to Roger Williams University on Wednesday evening in straight sets. With the win, the Hawks improve to 12-13 overall with a 5-2 record in league play. The Colonels move to 13-12 on the year and 0-7 in the CCC.

The Hawks opened the match by taking a 3-0 lead, but the Colonels fired right back by taking their first lead of the day with a five-point run. Curry tied the score at 7-7 thanks to a kill from sophomore Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan), but Roger Williams responded by taking 13 of the next 15 points to open up a 20-9 advantage. The teams split the next eight points, but a kill by Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) closed the set by a score of 25-13, in favor of the hosts.

Curry looked to get back into the match, taking the first two points of the second frame, but the lead was short-lived, as the Hawks took the next 10 to take an eight-point edge. The Colonels were able to cut the deficit to five at 13-8, but Roger Williams managed to hold off their guests, stretching their lead to 11 at 22-11 after a service ace by Lauren Burbridge (Cazenovia, N.Y.). The Colonels looked to build some momentum before the third set and continued to fight, but saw the Hawks take the second set with a 25-14 score.

The Colonels aimed to avoid the sweep as the third stanza got underway and claimed a brief 3-2 lead. However, another scoring run by Roger Williams brought the score to 8-3, capped by a kill from Allie Welch (Marlborough, Conn.). Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) brought the guests to within four at 11-7, but Curry would not manage to get any closer than that as the Hawks closed the conference win by taking the third set by a final of 25-16.

In the win, Roger Williams was led by the eight kills of Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) while Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) topped the team with 24 assists and eight digs. Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.) recorded a match-high 13 digs in the defeat, while the Colonels received eight kills from Pereira and 15 helpers from Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas).

The Colonels will close their season with a road CCC contest at Nichols College on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. Curry can secure their first winning season in program history with a win. The Hawks wrap up their regular season slate with a conference test at the University of New England on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. Entering the match, the Hawks sit one game in front of the Nor'Easters as the teams jockey for position in the upcoming CCC tournament.
