Volleyball Falls in Beverly

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match to Endicott College on Saturday afternoon in straight sets. The Gulls improve to 18-7 after the win, with a perfect 6-0 mark in-conference. The Colonels move to 13-11 on the year with a CCC record of 0-6.

The Gulls jumped out to a hot start, forcing the Colonels into a timeout after seeing their hosts jump out to an 8-2 edge. Out of the break, Endicott continued to roll with a 10-4 run, which brought the score to 18-6. A kill by Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas) cut the deficit to 10 at 23-13, but the hosts took the next pair of points and closed the first set by a score of 25-13.

The Colonels hung with their hosts, trailing by just one at 5-4 after nine points, but the Gulls scored 12 consecutive points to break the set open at 17-4. The teams traded points as the frame made its way to its close, but Endicott came out on top once again, this time by a score of 25-9.

After taking another 5-4 lead, the Gulls this time stretched their advantage to five at 10-5. However, the Colonels' night was not over, as they took the next three points to cut the lead to two. Curry stayed close, as Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) registered a kill to make the score 18-15, Endicott, but five straight Colonel points shortly later cut the lead all the way down to one at 22-21. The five-point run was highlighted by a pair of kills by sophomore Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.). With the pressure turned up, the hosts rattled off three consecutive points to close out the match, taking the third set by a 25-21 score.

The Colonels were led by the eight kills of Pereira while Damstra topped the team with 11 assists. Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.) turned in a match-high 14 digs in the loss, while Nichole Trudon (Coventry, Conn.) registered 12 digs for the Gulls. Nicole Winkler (Southborough, Mass.) turned in 11 kills on an impressive .526 clip for Endicott, while Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) led the hosts with 15 helpers.

The Colonels will get back to work as they travel to face CCC foe Roger Williams University on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. Endicott will also resume their conference schedule on Wednesday, as they head to the University of New England for a 7:00 p.m. match.
