MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team lost to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Gordon College on Tuesday evening by a score of 3-2. With the win, the Fighting Scots improve to 9-8 with a 2-2 record in the CCC. The Colonels move to 0-3 in league play with a 10-8 mark overall.
The teams swapped short runs to start the match, but after a service error gave Curry the edge at 8-7, the Scots rattled off five straight points to build a lead of their own. The Colonels managed to cut into the lead, bringing it down to one at 13-12, then down to two at 17-15, but Gordon managed to fight off their hosts, capping the first set with an 8-3 run to take it 25-18.
The second set opened with the teams once again trading blows, knotting the score at 10-all. Shortly later, a Gordon service error followed by an ace from Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) sparked a six-point Curry run, making it 21-17. The Scots tried to work their way back into the set, but the Colonels held them off and tied the match thanks to a 25-20 win in set two.
Looking to regain momentum, Gordon got out to a 6-1 lead in the third. Curry managed to rally back to 6-5, but the Scots again took a five-point advantage, this time at 10-5. The Colonels refused to back down, tying the score at 11-11, 12-12, and 13-13, and grabbed their first lead of the stanza at 21-20. However, after forcing a Gordon timeout, the hosts surrendered five straight and dropped into a 2-1 hole after a 25-21 third set.
Curry proved they still had life in them as the fourth set got underway, taking a quick 12-6 lead. The Scots gave them a scare with a six-point run, but the Colonels held them off and used a five-point streak to make it 23-15. Gordon broke the run after a timeout, but the Colonels collected the two points they needed to equalize the match, taking set four decisively by a score of 25-16.
The Scots took an early edge in the final set, taking three of the first four points, but Curry responded by taking the next three. Gordon took control again, however, and shot out to a 10-5 lead. A powerful kill from Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) gave the hosts their sixth point of the frame, but it would not be enough, as the Scots closed out the set by a score of 15-7 and took the CCC five-setter, 3-2.
The Scots lit up the stat sheet, with three players recording double-digit kills, led by Amanda Snyder (San Jose, Calif., 12), as well as four players with double-digit digs, topped by Jenny Curtiss (Larkspur, Colo., 18). The offense ran through Ashlyn Gergins (Murrieta, Calif.), who racked up 43 assists. The Colonels were led by the 13 kills of Pereira, which went along with 29 helpers from Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas). Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.) topped the team in digs with 29.
Curry gets back to work on Thursday, October 10 as they travel to face Lesley University at 7:00 p.m. The Scots also resume play on Thursday at 7 o'clock, as they head to Eastern Nazarene for a non-conference tilt.
