Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Bucs in Buzzards Bay

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team extended their win streak to eight matches by sweeping Mass. Maritime on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Colonels improve to 10-3 while the Buccaneers move to 1-10.

The Colonels jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the evening, but a pair of Curry miscues soon brought the hosts to within three at 8-5. The Colonels got back on track and stretched their lead to nine at 15-6, before a 10-5 run capped the first set by a score of 25-11.

The second set opened much like the first, as Curry took the first five points. Mass. Maritime brought the score to 11-6 thanks to an attack error by their guests, but the Colonels again took a 15-6 lead after four straight scores. Curry saw their lead dwindle all the way down to two as a four-point run by the Bucs made it 18-16, but the visitors closed strong and took a 2-0 lead thanks to a 25-19 win in set two.

The third set saw several close scores, with the teams tying nine times in the frame. A Mass. Maritime kill gave them an 18-16 lead as they tried to avoid the sweep, but Curry took the next five points to take the momentum. After the Bucs took a pair to cut the lead to one at 21-20, the Colonels closed out the set with the four points they needed, weathering a timeout at match point and taking the third set 25-20.

Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass.) led the Colonels with six kills, while senior captain Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) topped the team with 19 digs. Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas) and Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.) each recorded 11 assists with the latter pouring in four aces. Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.), who collected seven kills, led the Bucs. Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.) registered nine assists for the hosts while Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) led all players with 21 digs.

The Colonels will return home for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday, September 28. Curry will open their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule as they host the Salve Regina Seahawks. The Buccaneers will play next on Friday, September 27 as they travel to face MCLA in a 6:00 p.m. MASCAC tilt.
