MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team cruised to an opening night victory with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-14) sweep of Lesley University. The Colonels start the season off on the right foot at 1-0 while the Lynx open at 0-1.

The Lynx put Curry on the ropes briefly, starting the match with a 3-0 lead, but it would stand to be their largest edge of the night, as the Colonels quickly erased the deficit by scoring the next five points. Service aces and attack errors prevented Lesley from building any momentum, as Curry extended their lead to 11 thanks to an ace from Rebecca Johnson (St. Petersburg, Fla.), making the score 15-4. The deficit stood until 24-13, before Lesley made a late push with a three-point run, but it would be far too late, as the Colonels sealed the first set victory thanks to the Lynx third service error of the evening.

The second set was a close one out of the gate, with the teams trading points early and finding themselves knotted at 10-10. A kill from freshman Emilie Wilkenson (Lawrenceville, Ga.), however, broke the tie and started an 12-4 run for the hosts. The Lynx again strung together a few points as the end of the set neared, but a kill from Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) coupled with a Lesley error gave the Colonels a well-deserved 2-0 edge heading into set three. In the second stanza, Curry set a pair of school records, as their 17 kills ties the program record for most in a set, while their 16 assists in the frame set the all-time mark, thanks largely in part to the 12 which came from senior captain Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.).

Ten points and five helpers from Bell later, Curry had jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, prompting coach Bori May to sub in freshman Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine). The new setter lost no time in making her presence felt, tallying her first four collegiate assists to help Curry build a 13-7 edge. The teams went back-and-forth, but the Colonels kept their guests at bay, capping the sweep with the help of another Lesley service error.

Statistically, the Lynx were led by Cassidy Wygonik (Madison, Conn.), who accumulated 10 kills on the night. Allison Napoleon (Oahu, Hawaii) racked up 16 assists while Wygonik led the way in digs, with 10. Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) topped the Colonel offense with 14 kills, which were good for a .429 hitting percentage. Pereira also led the team with four service aces. Bell ended the night with 23 assists, while Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) was credited with a game high 18 digs.

Curry will look to keep their momentum going as their schedule continues with four matches this weekend. On Saturday, September 6, the Colonels will face SUNY Plattsburgh at 8:00 p.m. in the Husson Eagle Classic in Bangor, Maine. On Sunday, Curry will pull a triple header, facing Saint Joseph's (Maine) at 10:00 a.m., the hosting Eagles of Husson University at 12:00 p.m., and finally the Bates Bobcats at 2:00 p.m. The Lynx also get back on the court Friday, but return to Cambridge to take on Fisher College in their home opener. The non-conference action is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
