Women's Volleyball Tripped Up By Roger Williams in Straight Sets

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team fell by a 3-0 decision to Roger Williams University on Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Katz Gymnasium.

Roger Williams won by set scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-19 while hitting .286 as a team. Katherine Pickard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished with a match-high 12 kills to lead the RWU attack. Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) added six kills while Katie Nugent (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Allie Welch (Marlborough, Conn.) chipped in with four and three, respectively. Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) collected a team-high 16 assists while Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) pitched in with eight digs. The Hawks improved to 12-11 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) paced Curry (5-15 overall, 0-5 CCC) with eight kills and hit .222 in the contest. Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) contributed five kills and five digs while Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) chipped in a match-high 11 digs. Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) dished out a match-high 21 assists.

In the opening set, the Hawks built a 14-10 lead after a kill from Pickard. RWU finished the set strong, recording three kills over its final 10 points to secure the early 1-0 advantage.

The second set was started with three straight aces from Fields before the Hawks took control, jumping out to a 20-10 lead. Roger Williams finished off the set with a 5-2 spurt, capped off by a kill from Pickard to go up 2-0 in the match.

Roger Williams led by as many as seven points in the third set before the Colonels rallied back to pull within three, 21-18, on a kill by Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass.). After the mini 4-0 run, the Hawks closed it out with four of the final five points with a service error by Bell giving the final point to Roger Williams.

Curry will next host Nichols and St. Joseph's (Conn.) on Saturday, October 20 at 11 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. Roger Williams returns to action at home on Saturday for matches against Clark University at 11:00 a.m. and the University of New England at 1:00 p.m., respectively.
