Women's Volleyball Sweeps Anna Maria, Falls to Suffolk in Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team coasted to a 3-0 victory over Anna Maria College before falling by a 3-0 final to Suffolk in a tri-match on Saturday at Regan Gymnasium.

Match One – Curry 3, Anna Maria 0

The Colonels won by set scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-8 behind a solid offensive effort. Curry registered 41 kills on 74 total attempts and hit a season-high .486 for the match. Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) and Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) finished with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) tallied a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.

Taylor Hoffstedt (Lanesborough, Mass.) paced the AMCATS with four kills and added one digs.

Curry started the match hot, winning nine of the first 10 points to open up a big lead. The lead would eventually stretch to 14 (20-6) before the Colonels went onto take the set by a 16-point margin.

Curry opened up the second set registering 10 of the first 12 points. Kills by Pereira and Amanda Anderson (Hanson, Mass.) wrapped up the set, 25-12.

A 10-0 run early in the third set yielded a 13-2 Curry advantage, setting the stage for the straight-set victory.

Match Two – Suffolk 3, Curry 0

Suffolk won by set scores of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-19 while hitting .312 as a team. Kayla Barbera (Wakefield, R.I.) paced the Rams with a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs. Hannah Fabiano (Litchfield, N.H.) pitched in eight kills while Bridget Allison (Westford, Mass.) added five kills. Talia Lombardo (Windham, N.H.) also recorded a double-double of 33 assists and 11 digs while adding a match-high nine service aces.

Pereira led Curry with nine kills and 11 digs in the contest. Wood contributed six kills. Jordyn Keith (Whitman, Mass.) chipped in with 11 digs. Bell added 19 assists to lead the visitors.

In the opening set, the Rams doubled up the Colonels 10-5 in the early going and a 5-0 run extended the lead to 15-5. Curry would only get as close as nine for the rest of the set as they closed out the stanza by a 13-point margin for the 1-0 advantage.

The second set was controlled by Suffolk late as they used a 9-0 run to close out the frame 25-7 to go up 2-0 in the match.

The squads were knotted at 11 in the third before the Rams started to pull ahead. A kill from Chidera Nwankwo (Canton, Mass.) and an attack error from Curry gave Suffolk the third set win and the straight set victory.

Curry (5-14 overall) will next host Roger Williams University on Wednesday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m.
