Volleyball Falls to Regis in Season Opener, 3-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team fell to visiting Regis College on Wednesday night by a final of 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-21) in their season-opening match at the Katz Gymnasium.

Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) led the match with a high of 13 kills for the Pride (1-1), while Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) finished with six kills and one dig. For the Colonels (0-1), freshman Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) led the way with six kills and one block assist with freshman Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas) chipping in with five kills. Junior Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn) tossed out 20 assists, while defensively Damstra led the way in digs with 13.

The squads were evenly matched in set number one, with neither team grabbing more than a six-point lead in the opening stanza. Curry opened up a 19-13 lead but would relinquish the lead and the set following an 11-0 run to go up 24-19. The teams traded the final two points, as the Pride outscored Curry 12-2 over the final rallies.

Regis would grab the early advantage in set two. With a 17-13 lead in the set after a Veasey kill, Curry would pull within four. The Pride would put up nine straight points to take the set 25-13, giving Regis the 2-0 lead.

The teams would trade the first 22 points of the set (11-11) before an 8-1 run by the Pride broke the set open to 19-12. Curry would get back within five points, getting the score to 24-20 and a kill from Erin Gallagher (Tyngsboro, Mass.) would finish things off, giving Regis the win.

The Colonels will return to the court on Friday, September 7 for day one of the Profs Invitational hosted by Rowan University, when they square off against Widener at 6:00 p.m. and Ursinus at 8:00 p.m.
