Volleyball Eliminated From CCC Tournament With Loss in Quarterfinals to Roger Williams, 3-0

BRISTOL, R.I. – The top-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals with a 3-0 victory over eighth-seeded Curry College Tuesday evening.

With the win, Roger Williams (20-6) will host the #4 seed Wentworth Institute of Technology, who defeated #5 Western New England 3-2 earlier in the evening. Curry concludes the season at 11-18.

Curry kept the game close early on, coming back after the Hawks scored the first point of the game. The Colonels scored three of the next four points and eventually taking a 6-3 lead on a Hawk attack error. RWU would score three straight before a long serve put Curry back up 7-6. On the following point, Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) posted a kill that would spark an 11-0 Hawk run, giving RWU a 17-7 lead that they would not look back from. Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) would log back-to-back service aces to give RWU the 25-11 win.

The second set was a tight one early on, with six ties and three lead changes over the beginning. The turning point came on a Colonel attack error that helped RWU score seven straight points to break a six-all tie and put the Hawks up 13-7. Curry called a timeout to halt the run, but the Hawks came out of the break with an 8-3 run, going up by ten and forcing another Colonel timeout. On the final point, a heads-up play by Curry's Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) digging the ball out of the net from a dig by Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) helped keep the point alive for the time being. However on the other end, Kenningham put the set away 25-12 with a kill of her own.

The final set began similar to the first, with both teams trading points back and forth. The two sides combined for five ties and three lead changes to open the set. Kenningham helped cap off a 6-0 Hawk run with a kill to turn a 4-5 Colonel lead into a 10-5 RWU advantage. The Colonels managed to pull within three (9-12) but would be unable to come any closer. Kenningham logged the final three kills for RWU in the match to give the Hawks the 25-15 win.

Kenningham led the match with 13 kills on the evening and four aces, while Fallisi added 12 kills and four aces as well. Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill.) had 11 digs for RWU, while Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finished with 37 assists.

Stafford led Curry with eight kills and eight digs. Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) handed out 16 assists, with Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) adding five kills and a solo block.
