Volleyball Drops CCC Contest at Wentworth, 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-19)

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) recorded her third straight double-double as she had 17 kills and 12 digs to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to its 10th straight win, a 3-0 win over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 23-2 overall, matching the program record for wins set a season ago, and 5-1 in CCC play while the Colonels fall to 11-11 (2-5).

After Curry scored the first two points of the opening set, the teams traded points and there were five ties. With the score tied at 7-all, a kill from sophomore Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and an attack error gave Wentworth a 9-7 lead. A kill from Rogoz capped off a 4-1 spurt which gave the Leopards a 13-9. Sophomore Katie Couse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) served an ace to make the score 20-13, however, Curry scored the next four points with a pair of Wentworth errors, an ace from sophomore Shea Matthews (Concord, N.H.), and a block from senior Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) accounting for the points. The Leopards built their lead to 23-19 on a kill from Clouse and had set point at 24-20 thanks to a kill from sophomore Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.). Curry used a pair of Leopard errors to pull within two at 24-22, however a kill from Quick have the hosts a 25-22 win. Rogoz paced Wentworth with six kills in the set while Rice had four kills and hit .500 (4-0-8) for Curry.

Wentworth jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the second set and held a 7-4 lead on a kill from Quick. A 4-1 spurt tied the set at 8-all, thanks to a kill from freshman Jordyn Keith (Whitman, Mass.). Wentworth responded with a 5-1 run, capped off by back-to-back aces from Quick. A block from Rice cut the lead to 14-12 and forced the Leopards to call timeout. Out of the timeout a Rogoz kill started a run of six straight points to make it 20-12. A pair of attack errors ended the run, however, the Leopards scored the next three points and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win. Rogoz had four kills in the set while sophomore Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) had three kills on four swings without an error and Quick had three kills on 10 swings without an error. Rice had two blocks for the Colonels in the set.

Lassiter and Quick combined for a block and Quick recorded a kill to give Wentworth the first two points of the third set, however Curry got a pair of kills from Rice and an ace from Matthews to take a 3-2 lead. Lassiter tied the score at 3-all with a kill before Curry scored the next five points to take an 8-3 lead. During the run Rice had a kill and a block and junior Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) had a pair of kills. The Colonels extended their lead to 11-6 after a service error before a kill from senior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) and an attack error made it 11-8. Matthews made it 12-8 with a kill, however a block and kill from Lassiter and a kill from Quick made it 12-11. Back-to-back errors gave the visitors a 14-11 lead. Two kills from Rogoz and a kill from Lassiter evened the score at 14-all, the first of three ties, before a Rogoz kill and a setting error made it 18-16 Wentworth. The lead swelled to 22-17 before Curry took advantage of an error and got a kill from Rice to make it 22-19. A kill from Quick and two aces from junior Lillie Clark (Vista Calif.) ended the set, 25-19, giving the hosts the win. Rogoz had seven kills on 13 swings without an error in the third set, while Stafford had six kills on 10 swings without an error in the set for the Colonels.

Rogoz finished with a hitting percentage of .325 and also served a pair of aces. Quick had a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 16 digs to go along with three aces, while Lassiter had seven kills and a hitting percentage of .429 (7-1-14) and also had three blocks. Sophomore Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) finished with 16 digs, Clark served two aces, sophomore Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) had 19 assists, and Clouse finished with 18 helpers.

Stafford had a double-double for Curry as she had 11 kills and 10 digs. Rice had eight kills without making an error on 19 swings (.421) to go along with four blocks. Wilkes finished with 24 assists and senior Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) had 19 digs.

Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Saturday. Curry will compete in the Hall of Fame Tournament this weekend.
