BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team picked up two victories on Saturday afternoon, defeating Norwich 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24) and Suffolk by a final of 3-2 (22-25, 16-25, 29-27, 25-20, 15-13). The wins move the Colonels to 10-10 overall on the season while the Cadets move to 9-11. Suffolk now sits at 12-9 overall.

Match One – Curry 3, Norwich 1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24)

Curry picked up its first win of the day, taking down Norwich in four sets in non-conference play. The Colonels were led by Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) posted team highs of 12 kills. Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) was not far behind with 11 kills. Stafford also posted 10 digs to record a double-double. Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) dished out 37 assists and came up with 12 digs.

Norwich's Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) paced the Cadets with 13 kills and chipped in with 13 digs. Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) finished with 10 kills and seven digs while Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) tacked on a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs.

The squads traded the first 14 points of the set before either could grab an advantage. Curry put together a 6-1 run in the latter stages of the set to jump ahead by seven, 18-11. The Cadets pulled to as close as within four points (24-20) but the set would be closed out after Schroeder recorded a service error to win the first set, 25-20.

The second stanza followed a similar script as the first. The teams traded the first 22 points of the set before Norwich rattled off an 8-2 run to seize control with a 19-13 lead. The Colonels closed the margin and the score remained tight when back-to-back aces by Jordyn Keith (Whitman, Mass.) made the score 22-17. Curry made a late run, tallying five of the last six points, but Monica Schneider (Brookline, N.H.) finished off the set with a kill to give the Cadets the 25-22 second set victory.

The teams were evenly matched in the third set, each scoring 18 points through the first 36. The Colonels finished the set on a 7-4 run to gain a 2-1 set advantage. The set was clinched for Curry following an attack error by Schroeder to give the Colonels the 25-22 victory.

The fourth set was controlled by Curry early as they grabbed an 18-12 lead. Norwich answered back with a 6-0 run to knot the frame at 18. A 3-0 run capped off by a service ace from Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) gave the Cadets a 24-23 lead. The Colonels came right back with three points of their own to take the set and the match. A kill by Rice and back-to-back aces from Keith gave Curry the fourth set and the match victory in four sets.

Match Two – Curry 3, Suffolk 2 (22-25, 16-25, 29-27, 25-20, 15-13)

Curry grabbed its first five set victory of the season, rallying from two sets down to win three straight to defeat Suffolk 29-27, 25-20 and 15-13.

The Colonels were paced by Stafford, who posted a monster double-double of 22 kills and 21 digs. Rice finished up with 13 kills. Wilkes ended the match with 39 helpers to lead the way in the category.

Suffolk's Talia Lombardo (Windham, N.H.) registered a triple-double with 14 kills, 17 assists and chipped in with 18 digs. Hannah Fabiano (Litchfield, N.H.) put up a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Dakhensey Marcellus (Brockton, Mass.) recorded 20 digs while Liz Kerek (Holbrook, Mass.) paced the Rams with 29 assists.

In the first set of the match, Suffolk played with the lead for most of the stanza. The Rams later led 22-17 before the Curry turned things around to pull within one 23-22 following a kill from Stafford. Back-to-back errors from the Colonels gave Suffolk the opening set 25-22.

The Rams jumped out quickly in the second set, scoring the first five points. The lead would eventually hit nine at 20-11. Curry closed to within as few as six points but Suffolk closed the frame on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-16.

A kill by Rice put the Colonels 24-23 on top late in the third set. The squads fought late into the set with neither grabbing that crucial two point lead. Following a service error from Bridget Allison (Westford, Mass.) and an attack error from Rachel Fancy (Agawam, Mass.), Stafford capped the set with a kill to give Curry the 29-27 victory.

The fourth set was controlled by Curry as they led 20-14. Suffolk outscored the Colonels 6-5 over the rest of the set, but it was Stafford ending the set once again with a kill to knot the match at two sets apiece and send it to a deciding frame.

The teams traded the first 10 points of the set before either could gain the advantage in the deciding set. A 3-0 run capped off by a kill from Keith gave Curry an 8-5 advantage. The deficit remained less than five for the remainder of the set. The largest lead came when the score was 10-6 in favor of the Colonels. Suffolk pulled to within one late at 14-13, but Stafford finished the match off with a kill to clinch it for Curry.

Curry returns to the court on Monday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a 7:00 p.m. match.
