Volleyball Falls to UNE in CCC Play, 3-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team fell by a 3-1 final (25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-18) to the University of New England on Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference play. With the win, the Nor'easters improve to 7-10 and 2-2 in the CCC. The loss drops the Colonels to 8-8 and 2-3 in league play.

Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) led UNE with a team-high 10 kills and hit a match-high .429. Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) paced the visitors with 19 digs while Sydney Christiansen (Palatine, Ill.) registered 17 assists in the victory.

Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) recorded 13 kills to lead the way for Curry. Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished the match with 13 digs while Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J) paced the home squad with 25 assists.

The Colonels jumped out quick in the first set, grabbing a 6-0 lead. The University of New England would respond and tied the set at 12 nearly halfway through the first stanza. With the set tied at 19, the Nor'easters went on a 6-1 run to grab the 1-0 advantage with a 25-20 first set victory.

The second set was evenly matched as the teams traded 42 points (21-21). With the match knotted at 22, Curry closed the set on a 4-2 spurt to even the contest at one set apiece. The set was closed out strong with three straight points by the Colonels, thanks to kills by Rice, Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) and an ace from Jordyn Keith (Whitman, Mass.) as the Curry won it, 26-24.

UNE responded and captured the third set by a 25-16 final. With the frame tied at 10, the Nor'easters began to pull away, increasing their lead to six in the latter stages of the set. Up by a score 22-15, the University of New England closed out the set with a 4-1 spurt to win the stanza by nine.

The fourth set would once again hang in the balance in the early going with the teams trading the first 22 points. UNE started to pull away as they jumped out to a 19-12 lead after a service ace by Kristen Falcinelli (Silver Spring, Md.). The squads would each score six points apiece over the remainder of the set but it was eventually the University of New England with the 25-18 fourth set victory to take the match 3-1.

Curry will next play on Tuesday when they travel to Roger Williams for a 7:00 p.m. conference contest. UNE returns to action on Saturday when they host Southern Maine and Maine Maritime in a tri-match at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
