Volleyball Tripped Up in CCC Opener at Gordon, 3-1

WENHAM, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener by a final of 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 14-25, 25-20). With the victory the Fighting Scots improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the CCC while the loss drops the Colonels to 4-4 and 0-1 in league play.

Gordon was paced by Amanda Snyder, who led the Fighting Scots with 18 kills. Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) put up nine kills while Meghan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) contributed eight to contribute to the offensive output. Jenny Curtiss (Larkspur, Colo.) tallied a team-high 17 digs and Ashlyn Gergin (Murrieta, Calif.) dished out 33 assists to lead Gordon in those categories.

Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) registered a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs on the match. Stafford's kill and dig total were a team high's for Curry. Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) put up 13 digs to place right behind Stafford. Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) handed out 27 assists to lead the Colonels.

The first set was evenly matched through the first 20 points as the teams were tied at 10. Following an ace by Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.), the Fighting Scots would go on an 8-0 run to grab an 18-11 lead. Curry responded with a mini 4-0 run late in the stanza but it was Gordon taking the opening set, 25-19.

 The second set went the Fighting Scots' way by a final score of 25-14. Gordon quickly doubled up the Colonels 16-8 and grew their lead to nine later in the set. Curry would get as close as eight points in the latter stages of the frame, but a 5-1 spurt gave Gordon the second set.

 The Colonels responded in the third to take the set 25-14. Curry started the frame on a tear, winning 16 of the first 21 points. The Fighting Scots got to as close as within eight points (18-10), but the Colonels closed the set strong to force a fourth set.

The fourth frame was evenly matched as the teams traded the first 32 points (16-16). Gordon went on a 6-0 run to pull within three points of the match. Curry scored three points late but it was the Fighting Scots taking the final set, 25-20 to clinch the match.

Curry returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to UMass.-Dartmouth for a tri-match beginning with a matchup with Plymouth State at 2:00 p.m. The Colonels will face UMass.-Dartmouth at 4:00 p.m. after the contest with the Panthers. Gordon will next play on Saturday in a tri-match against Bridgewater State at 1:00 p.m. and Wheaton at 3:00 p.m.
