Volleyball Drops Non-League Tilt at Mount Ida, 3-1

NEWTON, Mass. – For the second time in her career, Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) had a monster day against Curry College, racking up 18 kills as the Mustangs beat the Colonels 3-1 in their women's volleyball home opener Tuesday night at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

Walton came two kills shy of her career best, a 20 kill performance that came two years ago, also against Curry. This year she added 12 digs, two assists and a service ace, as well as two block assists in the victory.

Mount Ida dropped the first set 25-21, and then came back to win the next three sets 25-12, 25-17 and 27-25.

The Mustangs struggled out of the gate, and dropped the first set to Curry, who got 7 kills from junior Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) and eight kills out of senior Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) in the contest.

Mount Ida responded with an outpouring of offense in the sets that followed, finishing with 63 total kills compared to Curry's 28. Freshmen hitter Rachel Colombo (Wallkill, N.Y.) went for 16 kills, while senior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) added 14 and 17 digs in the winning effort.

Sophomore setter Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) contributed 48 assists and 15 digs in the winning effort, which brings the Mustangs to 5-3 on the year while dropping the Colonels to 4-3 this season.

Mount Ida will look to keep the offense rolling when they head to New York for the Union/Sage Crosstown Tournament on Sept. 15.

Curry will look to bounce back when they head to Gordon College to open conference play on Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
