Volleyball Outlasts Bridgewater State in Four Tight Sets, Defeats Bears 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22)

MILTON, Mass-The Curry College volleyball team defeated visiting Bridgewater State University in non-conference women's volleyball action Tuesday night in Milton. The Colonels improved to 7-9 on the season while the Bears fell to 7-11 overall.

Curry played a competitive first set, but eventually fell 26-24. Curry began the opening set by winning four of the first five points. The set eventually became tied at 23 and then the Bears rattled off three straight points to capture the first set of the match.

The Colonels were led by Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass), who led Curry with a match-high 18 kills. Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn) paced the Colonels with 43 assists while Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) registered 26 digs.

After dropping the first set, Curry responded to take the second, third and fourth sets by a total of seven points. Late in the second set, following a service error to make the score 24-23, one kill apiece by Stafford and Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) gave Curry the one-point advantage late in the set. Stafford stepped up to the service line with the Colonels with in the lead and delivered an ace to give Curry the 26-24 second set victory.  

The third set was once again a contested battle with the two teams trading the lead throughout. With the score 23-22 in favor of Bridgewater State, the Colonels would win three points in a row to take the third set and earn the 2-1 advantage.

With the close score in the fourth set Curry would prevail in the final stages. After a kill by Erika Costa (Seekonk, Mass) to give the Colonels a two point advantage at 24-22, Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass) won the final point and closed out the match for Curry.

Curry returns to the court on Thursday when they play host to Roger Williams at 6 p.m. Bridgewater State will be back in action Thursday and will play Salve Regina at 6 p.m.
