Women's Volleyball Drops CCC Opener to Visiting Wentworth, 3-0

MILTON, Mass. – The visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball squad swept past Curry College 3-0 Tuesday night in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both schools. The three closely-contested set scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22. The Leopards improved to 7-6 (1-0 CCC), while the Colonels fell to 4-10 (0-1 CCC).

The teams went back and forth all night, with the Leopards pulling ahead late in each set. In the first set, Wentworth outdistanced the Colonels, 25-20. Curry held early leads in each of the last two sets, but late pushes by the Leopards resulted in a pair of 25-22 wins.

Wentworth was led by freshman Sydney Myers (Arnold, Md.) with a match-high eight kills. Classmate Kayla Gendreau (Hudson, N.H.) contributed a team-best five aces along with two block assists. Senior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) recorded a match-best 22 assists, while classmate Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with 14 digs.

Sophomore Nicole Grambley (No. Attleboro, Mass.) paced the Colonels with five kills, seven assists and four aces. Classmate Makayla Hughes (Franklin, N.H.) also dished out seven assists. Freshman Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded a match-high 15 digs, while classmate Lauren Hall (Franklin, Mass.) amassed five aces. Sophomore Kayla Pedersen (Whitman, Mass.) contributed a match-best four block assists.

Both teams resume play on Thursday, as Curry hosts Roger Williams University in CCC action at 6:00 p.m., while Wentworth entertains non-conference foe Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m.
