Women's Volleyball Tripped Up 3-0 at Wentworth in CCC Action

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Hannah Bailey's (Plymouth, Mass.) 15 kills, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept Curry College, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-12) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at Tansey Gymnasium.

With the win the Leopards improve to 16-8 overall and 2-4 in CCC play, while the Colonels fall to 9-16 (0-6).

Curry came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and took a quick 4-1 lead. After Wentworth took a point, sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) stepped to the service line and helped her team score six straight points to force a Colonel timeout. With the score 7-4 in favor of the Leopards, Young continued her strong play at the line and helped extend the lead to 10-4. Wentworth's lead would balloon to 20-13 before Curry battled back with four straight points to get within three. A Bailey kill put the score at 22-19 and helped finish the first set with Wentworth taking the 25-22 victory.

The Colonels took another early lead in the second set behind solid serves and defensive play. With the score 6-2 in favor of Curry, Bailey recorded three kills and Young aced to tie the game at six. The set would be tied at both 8-all and 9-all before Sheena Dignean's (Constantia, N.Y.) lefty kill gave Wentworth the 11-10 lead. The Black & Gold then went on to score 10 straight points to extend their lead to 20-11. Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) ended the frame with a kill from the right side to give Wentworth the 25-16 win.

Wentworth would start the scoring in the final set, and took an early 10-2 lead behind two Bailey kills. Curry would fight back to tighten the score at 12-7 with help from a Brittany Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) block. Wentworth stepped up the intensity and built its lead to 20-11 after a Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) ace. Curry would take one final point, but the Leopards were too much as Hunton scored the final two points to give the Leopards a 25-12 win, completing the sweep

In addition to Bailey's 15 kills (and six digs), Young added nine kills (on 12 swings), six aces, and three blocks. Dignean had eight kills and five digs, Hunton had four kills and two aces, Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 30 assists, and Curran had 10 digs and a pair of aces.

Curry was led by Emily Boudreau's (Marshfield, Mass.) five kills, while Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) added four kills. Lynch had three kills, junior Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) had three blocks, and Alyssa Keaney (Coventry, Conn.) and freshman Kayla Greeley (Medford, Mass.) had nine and eight digs, respectively.

Wentworth hosts Worcester State on Saturday afternoon while Curry is at Gordon on Tuesday night.
