Women's Volleyball Edged by Southern Maine, 3-2; Knocks Off Mass. Maritime, 3-0

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College hosted Southern Maine and Mass. Maritime in a women's volleyball tri-match Saturday in Milton. In the opening match, the Huskies outlasted the Colonels, 3-2 (25-13, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-7). In the second match, Southern Maine knocked off the Buccaneers, 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-10). In the final match, the Colonels blanked Mass. Maritime, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-11).

The Huskies were led by freshman Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, Mass.) with a team-high 12 kills, who also recorded 13 digs. Freshman Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) dished a game-best 18 assists, while sophomore Demi Ruder (Grand Junction, Colo.) and classmate Bridget Burns (Warrenville, Ill.) had 19 digs apiece.

Freshman Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) led Curry with a game-high 14 kills and also chipped in with 15 digs. Junior Hannah Robison (Cumberland, R.I.) contributed with 12 assists and five service aces. Freshman Lauren Gaffney (Wallingford, Conn.) added a team-best 19 digs.

Southern Maine 3, Mass. Maritime 0

Burns led the Huskies with game-highs in service aces (9) and digs (9). Rubico added a game-best five kills. Rubico and Ruder recorded four service aces. Freshman Shelby Park (Thorburn, Nova Scotia) chipped in with seven assists.

Senior Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Marissa Boudreau (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded six digs each. Garrity also added two kills.

Curry 3, Mass. Maritime 0

The Colonels were led by Grambley and junior Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) with five kills apiece. Robison dished out a game-high 10 assists, while Grambley recorded a game-best 15 digs.

Junior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) led the Buccaneers with team-highs in kills (5), digs (8) and service aces (2).

Curry now stands at 2-4 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday, visiting Bridgewater State for a 6:00 p.m. contest. Southern Maine improves to 4-1 and will host a tri-match on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m. against Maine-Machias and Castleton. Mass. Maritime falls to 0-3 and will resume play on Monday, hosting Suffolk for a 7:00 p.m. match.
