NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women’s volleyball team powered to a 3-0 victory over Curry College in non-conference action on Monday evening at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Mariners (3-7 overall) won by set scores of 25-14, 30-28 and 25-19 to post their first three-set victory of the season. Sophomore Jaclyn Tempkins (Nashville, Tenn./Currey Ingram Academy) led the squad with 11 kills while junior Gloria Charles (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) and senior Arianna Thomas (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West) contributed with nine and eight kills, respectively. Junior Nicole Terni (Ledyard, Conn./Montville) also had a strong night with a match-high 32 assists, 10 digs and four service aces.

Curry (7-4 overall) was led by Courtney DiBiasio (Coventry, R.I./Coventry), who finished with a match-high 12 kills and added 14 digs. Hannah Robison (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) handed out 21 assists while Lauren Schneider (Los Angeles, Calif./Wildwood School) chipped in with 14 digs.

Mitchell played a strong first set and never trailed. Terni served the Mariners to six straight points and built a double-digit lead at 17-7, eventually extending the margin to as many as 12. Tempkins recorded four kills in the frame while Charles added three.

Curry recovered in the second set and led by as many as six at 20-14. After taking a timeout, Mitchell clawed back into the set behind the serve of Thomas and won seven of the next eight points to tie the score at 21-21. The two sides then battled back and forth for the next 16 points, as Mitchell fought off one set point and Curry survived four. The Mariners finally pulled out a two-point advantage after Terni served deep and forced a free ball back to the home side, and Charles put down the kill for the set victory.

The Mariners took an early lead in the final set, but DiBiasio served the Colonels back in front to a 10-8 advantage. However, Mitchell took control by winning 10 of the next 11 points to seize an 18-11 lead that it would never relinquish. Thomas paced the Mariners with five kills in the stanza while Wallis and DiBiasio had three apiece to lead Curry.

Mitchell will next open conference play when it hosts Becker College on Saturday, September 29 at noon. Curry returns to action at home against Gordon College on Wednesday, September 26 at 6 p.m. (Match recap courtesy of Mitchell College Sports Information)
