Salem State Bests Women’s Tennis

SALEM, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team lost to the Salem State Vikings on Thursday evening by a score of 9-0. After the loss, the Colonels sit at 0-14 while the Vikings improve to 3-4 overall.

At first doubles, Anastasia Startseva (Volgograd, Russia) and Meredith Macdonald (Lynn, Mass.) topped Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) by a score of 8-1. Alexandria Floyd (Burlington, Mass.) and Caroline Robitaille (South Hadley, Mass.) shut out Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) and Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 8-0 at second. The Vikings took third doubles by default.

Salem State continued to roll as singles play began, as Startseva topped Wiernusz 6-4, 6-2. Daigle stayed close with Robitaille at second, but fell 7-5, 7-5. Macdonald edged out Valvo at third, 6-0, 6-2 while fourth singles saw Floyd blank Gilbert 6-0, 6-0. The Vikings completed the sweep by taking fifth and sixth singles by default.

The Colonels will close their season with a pair of home matches on Saturday, October 5 during Curry's Homecoming and Family Weekend. The Colonels will face Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Nichols at 11:00 a.m. before taking on non-conference foe Emerson at 4:30 p.m. The Vikings will also return to action on Saturday, as they host Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m. in Little East Conference (LEC) action.
