Women’s Tennis Falls to Sharks in Home Match
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team lost to Simmons College this afternoon in a non-conference match. The Sharks improve to 4-6 while the Colonels are in search of their first victory at 0-11.
Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.) started the day with an 8-4 win over Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) at first doubles. Leah Bonis (Bath, Maine) and Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) took second doubles over Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) and Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) by a score of 8-3. The Sharks took third doubles by default.
Simmons kept pushing in singles play, as Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) beat Wiernusz 6-3, 6-0 at first while Bonis topped Valvo 6-3, 6-1 at third. Daigle helped the Colonels avoid the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mariski at second, but McKeever took a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gilbert at fourth, before the Sharks completed their 8-1 victory by taking fifth and sixth singles by default.
The Sharks will get back to action on Saturday, September 28 with a 12:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match against the Suffolk Rams at the Daly Courts in Boston. The Colonels next match will also be at noon on Saturday, as they host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Roger Williams.
