MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team was defeated by St. Joseph (Conn.) by a score of 6-3 on Thursday afternoon. After the loss, the Colonels sit at 0-8 while the Blue Jays move to 3-3.

St. Joseph started the afternoon by sweeping doubles play. Jessica McAllister (Bristol, Conn.) and Elaina Griffiths (Guilford, Conn.) beat Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) in a close first doubles match-up. McAllister and Griffiths edged out their opponents 8-7 (7-4). Carolyn Callahan (Southington, Conn.) and Marie Emerson (Killingworth, Conn.) doubled the guests' lead with an 8-2 victory at second over Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine). The Blue Jays took third doubles by default.

Entering singles play looking to get onto the scoreboard, Wiernusz topped McAllister 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at first for the Colonels' first point of the day. Daigle gave the hosts another point, beating Griffiths 6-2, 7-6 at second. Merrill outlasted Callahan at fourth by scores of 6-7, 6-4, 10-4, but the Blue Jays' fourth and ultimately decisive point came as Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) beat Valvo 6-1, 6-2 at third. At fifth, Elke Moser Melis (Nijmegen, Netherlands) downed Curry's Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 6-0, 6-3. The Blue Jays completed the victory by taking sixth singles by default.

The Blue Jays will head home to take on the Suffolk Rams on Saturday, September 21 at 12:00 p.m. in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, but not before traveling to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. to compete in the Grass Courts Doubles Championships. The Colonels get back to work by picking back up their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule with a 1:00 p.m. match at Endicott, also on Saturday.
