Women’s Tennis Shutout as Conference Play Begins

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team was shutout 9-0 by the Salve Regina Seahawks on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels' record sits at 0-6 after the loss while they start their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at 0-1. The Seahawks sit at 1-1 overall with a 1-0 CCC mark.

At first doubles, the Salve pair of Lauren Harvey (Edmond, Okla.) and Makenzie Sadler (Mystic, Conn.) topped Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) and Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) 8-3. Lily Gorman (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and Annemarie Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) gave the hosts a 2-0 lead with an 8-2 win over Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.). The Seahawks took third doubles by forfeit.

At first singles, Harvey topped Wiernusz 6-0, 6-0. Shealyn FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) beat Merrill 6-4, 6-0 and Gorman edged out Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 6-2, 6-0 at third and fifth, respectively. At second doubles, Sadler beat Daigle 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, while Priscilla Gaspard (Brockton, Mass.) outlasted Valvo 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 with a super tiebreaker at fourth. The Seahawks completed the sweep by taking sixth singles by forfeit.

The Seahawks continue their CCC schedule with a Wednesday, September 18 match at Endicott at 3:30 p.m. The Colonels also stay in league play, as they'll travel to face Gordon at 4:00 p.m., also on Wednesday.
