Women's Tennis Falls in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team fell at the hands of Johnson & Wales University by a score of 8-1 in its season opener Friday afternoon. The Wildcats start the season 1-0 while the Colonels begin the year 0-1.

The afternoon started with the Wildcats taking a scoring edge by winning the first and third doubles sets, while Curry picked up their first point in the second match-up. Claire Parry (Chester, N.H.) and Drew Bobey (Charleston, S.C.) started things off with an 8-1 win over Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.). Sara Johnson (Amesbury, Mass.) and Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) topped Mackenzie Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) and Kristen O'Connell (Hudson, N.Y.) by a score of 8-5. Kat Ledesma (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Lily Votta (Scituate, R.I.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-1 victory over Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) and Anna Gourgeot (North Hampton, N.H.).

Heading into singles play with a 2-1 edge, Johnson & Wales rolled through the six match-ups. At first singles, Parry defeated Wiernusz in two sets (6-0, 7-5). Emily Hill (Wilmington, Mass.) topped Daigle at second, also in two sets (6-0, 6-2). At third, Valvo fell to Gabriela Velazquez (La Romana, D.R.) 6-2, 6-1. In each of the last three singles clashes, JWU wrapped up 6-0, 6-0 victories. At fourth, Sydney Constantinidi (North Branford, Conn.) beat Johnson, Katie Mason (Grafton, Mass.) topped Gilbert at fifth, and Madison Allan (Chester, N.H.) bested Gourgeot to finish off singles.

The Wildcats get back to action with their home opener against Gordon College on Wednesday, September 4 at 3:00 p.m. The Colonels stay home at the Trent J. Scott '96 courts to take on Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3.
