Women's Tennis Bested By Western New England in League Play, 9-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team fell to visiting Western New England University by a 9-0 final in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Bears, who claimed its first conference victory, improved to 1-3 overall 1-2 in league play.

Western New England started the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) won at first doubles, 8-6, over Hannah Faghan (Whitman, Mass.) and Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine). Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) captured an 8-2 win at second doubles, while Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) topped Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) by an 8-3 mark.

The Golden Bears continued their strong play into the singles portion of the competition, winning all six matches in straight sets. Faghan fell at number one singles to LaPress 6-2, 6-3. Petra Martinelli edged Cash-Sortwell 7-5, 6-3 at number two while Cote finished off Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) at third singles 6-4, 7-5.

Western New England finished off the final three singles matches only dropping a combined seven games to complete the sweep.

Curry (0-5 overall, 0-2 CCC) will next host Gordon College on Saturday, September 22 at noon. Western New England returns to the court on Saturday as they welcome in Salve Regina for a match at noon.
