Women's Tennis Topped By Salem State, 8-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis suffered an 8-1 setback to visiting Salem State University on Saturday afternoon at the Big Nine Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Vikings move to 1-0 while the Colonels fall to 0-2.

Salem State began the match by sweeping doubles play. The first doubles tandem of Anastasia Startasia and Caroline Robitalli (South Hadley, Mass.) topped Hannah Faghan (Whitman, Mass.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.), 8-1. Madeline Allaire (Columbus, Ohio) and Meredith MacDonald (Lynn, Mass.) got by Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine) and Rosario Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) at second doubles, 8-2. Kristin Klimowicz (Ipswich, Mass.) and Hannah Dahrouge (South Hadley, Mass.) defeated Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) at third doubles, 8-3.

The Vikings were able to capture four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Cash-Sortwell was able to salvage a point for Curry at number three singles, topping MacDonald in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-4, Cash-Sortwell responded to win the second set 7-5 and then won a third set tiebreak, 10-4.

The Colonels will next play at UMass.-Dartmouth on Monday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m. Salem State will travel to Eastern Nazarene for a match on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
