Women's Tennis Earns First Win of the Season Defeating Salem State, 7-2

SALEM, Mass. – Curry College earned their first win of the season, defeating the Salem State Vikings 7-2 at the Central Campus Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.  The Colonels improve to 1-2 on the season while Salem State opens the year 0-1.

April McDermott (Tewskbury, MA) and Hillary Gustafson (Belchertown, MA) were the lone bright spots for the Vikings, as each player won their singles match. McDermott, playing in the No. 1 position defeated Kayla Prete (Orange, CT), 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Gustafson bested Laura Ferris (Shelton, CT), 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles.

Curry swept the doubles session of the match to earn a 3-0 lead. Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, CT)/ Hannah Erickson (Mount Desert, ME) beat McDermott/Tara Garvey (Three Rivers, MA), 8-5 while Prete/Katelyn Harrington (Westport, MA) won 8-4 over Gustafson/ Ann Spence  (Attleboro, MA).  Alexandra Moschetto Hampton Falls, NH)/Ferris scored the third doubles point for the Colonels at third doubles.

Love and Erickson garnered wins at second at third singles for Curry. Love beat Cassie Morrison (Clinton, MA), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Erickson defeated Garvey 6-2, 4-6, and 10-7. Harrington and Moschetto picked up points at fifth and sixth singles, winning in straight sets for the Colonels.

Salem State will host UMass Dartmouth this Saturday at 1:00 PM while Curry goes to Gordon tomorrow for a 4:00 PM tilt. (Match recap courtesy of Salem State University)
