Women's Tennis Upended, 5-4, in Conference Opener at Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's tennis team clinched its first league victory of the season Saturday, topping Curry 5-4 Saturday afternoon.

The Lions improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Colonels fall to 0-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

The visitors claimed a pair of doubles victories to cling to a 2-1 edge.

Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied Eastern Nazarene's lone win in doubles play at the No. 2 position. The duo outdueled Curry's Hannah Erickson and Laura Ferris 9-8. Cressman and Tubbs closed out the two-hour long match with a 7-4 decision in the tiebreaker.

Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) suffered an 8-5 setback at the No. 1 spot to Kimberly Love and Kayla Prete. Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) fell to Alexandra Moschetto and Alison Rhodes 8-6 at the third doubles slot.

The hosts posted four singles victories en route to earning their first conference win since 2010.

Steelman defeated Love at the top singles position 6-3, 6-1 and Burrello bested Prete 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

Tubbs dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the fourth singles match to Erickson. Lariviere absorbed a 6-4, 6-1 loss at the No. 5 slot.

Cressman and Mohnkern each won by forfeit after both opponents were forced to retire.

Up next, Eastern Nazarene hosts Western New England September 9 in a league clash.  Curry's next match is at home on Tuesday September 9 when they host Rhode Island College.  (Match recap courtesy of Eastern Nazarene Sports Information)
