BOSTON, Mass.—In one of the most competitive home matches of the season, UMass Boston (5-9) fell just short on Senior Day in a 6-3 loss to Curry College (10-6) Tuesday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.
UMass Boston honored senior co-captains Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) and Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) before the game as part of the team's Senior Day Ceremonies.
Curry College took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to winning one of the two doubles matches that went to a tiebreak.
In singles play, the Colonels took three of the first four points to earn the victory, before Kloczewiak closed out the match with a huge victory in the final home match of her career.
Elizabeth Zarkades and Devin Curley opened the match with an 8-0 win for Curry over the Beacons duo of Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.).
The Beacons responded with a big win at number two singles, as Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) and Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) outlasted Emily Mongello and Molly Louis 9-8, with a 7-4 win in the tiebreak.
Curry closed out the doubles portion of the match with an intense 9-8 win. Megan Mulrooney and Kimberly Love held off Kloczewiak and Counts 9-8, with a 10-8 edge in the tiebreak.
The match marked the 100th career result for Counts, who ranks second only to Kloczewiak on the UMass Boston career record list.
UMass Boston opened up singles play with a victory, as Shea knocked off Curley 6-2, 6-4 at sixth-flight singles.
Zarkades put the Colonels back into the lead at 3-2, when she defeated Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) 6-3, 6-3 at number five singles.
Curry pushed the lead out to 4-2, as Louis earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at number three singles over Castelli.
The Colonels clinched the victory at number two singles, as Mongello picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Counts.
Curry capped off their scoring with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number four singles, as Love defeated Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey).
Kloczewiak ended the day on a bright note for UMass Boston, as she took a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at number one singles over Megan Mulrooney. With the victory, Kloczewiak picked up her team-leading 20th victory of the season and stands one win shy of tying the program-record for a single-season.
Curry College finished their season with a 10-6 mark, their most wins since 2010. UMass Boston will return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. as they travel to Plymouth State University for a key Little East Conference matchup. (Match recap courtesy of UMass Boston Sports Information)
