Women's Tennis Upsets Rhode Island College, 6-3

Providence, R.I.-Senior Emily Mongello (Plymouth, MA) won at No. 2 singles, while pairing with classmate Lauren Chuha (Reading, MA) for a win at the top doubles spot, as Curry handed Rhode Island College its first loss of the season in a 6-3 decision played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.

Curry raised its record to 7-3, while the Anchorwomen drop to 9-1.

Mongello and Chuha combined for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while senior Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, MA) and sophomore Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, CT) won at No. 2 doubles by the same score.

Seniors Devin Curley (Mansfield, MA) and Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, MA) secured an 8-5 win at third doubles.

In singles action, Mongello won the first set 7-6 (8-6) over RIC sophomore Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) and won the match when Cannata was forced to retire. The Colonels also registered a win at No. 5 singles as Love defeated RIC freshman Jorgie Martin (Smithfield, RI), 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Kayla Prete (Orange, CT) picked up a win, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7, over RIC freshman Ashley Fochler (Coventry, RI) at sixth singles.

RIC sophomore Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) defeated Mulrooney (6-1, 6-2) at No. 1 singles. Freshman Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) won (6-0, 6-3) at No. 3 singles, while classmate Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) won (6-2, 1-6, 10-7) at fourth singles to round out the scoring.

The Anchorwomen were without junior captain Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT), who starts at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles. Reddy and Tiberi suffered their first loss of the season at No. 2 doubles.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against Worcester State on Saturday, Sept. 28 (1 p.m.). Curry hosts Holy Cross on Monday, September 30 (3:30 p.m.)
