Women's Tennis Edges Gordon College, 5-4

WENHAM, Mass.— Curry edged Gordon 5-4 in a pivotal CCC matchup at the Brigham Tennis Courts on Tuesday evening. The Scots took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but a late rally from the Colonels in the final few singles matches made the difference in the end.

The Scots got on the board first when Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) picked up an 8-2 win at second doubles. The duo rebounded from a tough loss to Nichols on Saturday with a statement win and improved to 2-2 in conference play.

Curry countered with a surprising result of their own, as Emily Mongello (Plymouth, Mass.) and Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) proved to be too much for Gordon's top doubles flight. Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.) fall to 7-3 on the year with the loss.

Gordon rebounded at third doubles with Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) and Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) gutting out an 8-6 win over Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) and Devin Curley (Marshfield, Mass.). The senior-freshman duo has not lost since joining forces at the beginning of last week.

Taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, Gordon was hoping to shut the door early on the Colonels. Hall breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles and Yeaw clinched a straight-set victory over her own over Mongello.

However, the Colonels would take the next two matches at fourth and sixth singles to make things interesting.

Lily Drescher won her first set against Molly Louis (Guilford, Conn.) at the third flight and had a lead in the second set, but Louis fought back. The Colonels' No. 3 won the second set 7-5 to force a deciding set. There, Louis got off to a great start and finished off Drescher 6-3 to tie the overall match a four apiece.

Freshman Rebecca Levy rallied after a first set loss and won a gritty second set in a tiebreak to set up a thrilling final set. Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.) outpaced Levy over the final few games and claimed the narrow victory for Curry at 5-4.

Curry improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in CCC play, while the Scots fall to 6-5 on the year and 2-3 in conference.

Gordon is back on the courts on Friday for another important CCC match at Salve Regina.  Curry travels to Mount Ida on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. match.  (Match recap courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
