PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Curry College women's soccer team opened the 2022 season in style on Thursday afternoon, topping Rhode Island College by a final score of 4-1.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-0-0 on the young season.
The Colonels found the back of the net three times in under five minutes late in the first half to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the break. Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) opened the scoring off a goal-mouth scramble in the 29th minute for Curry's first marker of the season, and 2:49 later, she one-timed a shot past the RIC keeper for a 2-0 lead. Senior McKenna Reid (Irvine, Calif.) and junior Lexi LaPerle (Ledyard, Conn.) assisted on the tally.
Sophomore Sydney Resendes (Coventry, R.I.) stretched the lead to three with a goal from distance in the 34th minute for her first goal of the season.
In the second half, Rhode Island College ended sophomore Hannah Correa's (Carver, Mass.) clean sheet in the 62nd minute, but Curry got the goal back just 3:33 later when Resendes netted her second goal of the afternoon with a right-footed strike into the top corner of the net. The tally put the Colonels ahead by a score of 4-1, a score that would hold up as the final.
Correa earned the victory between the pipes, notching four saves in the win.
Next up for the Colonels, they will play their home opener on Saturday afternoon against Regis College at Walter M. Katz Field. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
