Women's Soccer Bests Roger Williams for First CCC Win

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College women's soccer team posted its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory of the season by a 3-1 final over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field. The win marks the first time the Colonels have beaten the Hawks since the 2004 season.

Sophomore Maddie Wilson (Millbury, Mass.), freshman Madison Conway (West Springfield, Mass.), and junior Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) all found the back of the net for Curry on the day, and freshman Oliver Hutchinson (Scituate, Mass.) made seven saves. The Colonels improved to 5-5-0 overall (1-1-0 CCC) while Roger Williams dropped to 5-6-0 overall (1-1-0 CCC).

Curry struck for the first goal in the 19th minute as Conway gathered a pass at midfield and was able to send a through ball to Wilson, who was virtually one-on-one with the Hawks' sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.). Wilson fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box and beat Strassburg over the top.

Leading 1-0 at the half, Curry added to its margin in the 62nd minute as Randall passed the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box. The ball was deflected and ultimately found the foot of Conway as she deposited it in the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage.

The Colonels tallied their final goal on a strike from Randall as she was able to get by a defender and fire a shot past Strassburg for the 3-0 lead.

Roger Williams got on the board in the 89th minute as senior Sara Newinski (Lawrenceville, N.J.) netted her first marker of the season on an unassisted tally.

Strassburg faced eight shots in the contest and finished with five saves for the Hawks.

Curry will next play at home against UMass Dartmouth on Monday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. Roger Williams will have a quick turnaround as they will stay at home to play host to Elms College on Sunday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m.
