Women's Soccer Cruises Past NVU-Johnson, 7-0

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Curry College women's soccer team cruised past Northern Vermont University-Johnson by a final of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Minaert Field. The contest featured seven different goal scorers as the Colonels improved to 2-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first 20 minutes of play, scoring came fast and furious to break the contest open for Curry. Alyson Hampston (North Easton, Mass.) opened the scoring as she tallied her first goal of the season, off an assist from Isabella Shields (Lakeville, Mass.). Just over a minute later, the Colonels struck again, thanks to an unassisted tally from Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) to increase the lead to two. Lauren Clapper (New Bedford, Mass.) and Shields closed out the scoring in the first half as the Colonels dominated in shots, 15-5 and while edging the Badgers in corners, 2-1.

Coming out of the intermission, Curry got right back on the offensive and scored three more times. Courtney Cushing (Gorham, Maine) put a shot past NVU-Johnson keeper Kaitlin Boucher (Barre, Vt.) off an assist from Maddie Wilson (Millbury, Mass.) in the 52nd minute. Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) and Kelsie Rainone (Plainville, Mass.) closed out the scoring to give the Colonels the blowout victory.

Curry dominated the offensive side of the ball, outshooting the Badgers 33-7 and held the edge in corner kicks, 6-1.

Junior goalkeeper Katelyn DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) was awarded the victory as the junior registered four saves in 45 minutes of action. Maggie Chamberlain (Taunton, Mass.) made her collegiate debut, playing in the final 45 minutes while making one save.

The Colonels will next play at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Sunday, September 9 at noon. NVU-Johnson will host Newbury College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for their next contest.
