Women's Soccer Edges UMass.-Boston 2-1 in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Soccer team defeated visiting Umass.-Boston, 2-1, on Thursday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 7-2-2 on the season. The loss drops the Beacons to 1-8 overall.

The teams battled each other to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes of play.  Both keepers were solid in net with Curry's sophomore keeper Kristen Buzzotta (Lynnfield, Mass.) making three stops and UMB's sophomore keeper Jessie Tenaglia (Braintree, Mass.) making one save.  The Beacons held the advantage in shots at 6-2.

Curry opened the scoring in the second half as senior Cassie Grasso (Wilmington, Mass.) tallied a goal off a feed from freshman Sarah McGrath (North Dartmouth, Mass.) to put the Colonels on top 1-0 at the 50:52 minute mark.  Curry extended its lead to two when McGrath netted the eventual game-winner with help from senior Korinna Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.).  The Beacons earned their lone goal of the night with nine minutes left to play.  Senior Jessie Beverlin (Eagle River, Alaska) sent classmate Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) a pass from outside the 18-yard box.  Beverlin collected the ball and one-timed it past the glove of the Colonels sophomore keeper Haley Rice (Lexington, Mass.) who came in for Buzzotta.  Curry held a slight advantage in shots in the second period at 10-8.

UMB held the edge in shots at 14-12 and attempted seven corner kicks to just four for Curry.

Buzzotta earned the win for the Colonels making six saves on the night in 76:54 minutes before giving way to Rice who made one save allowing one goal in 13:06 minutes. Tenaglia took the loss for the Beacons with seven stops.

Curry is back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Gordon College for a 12:00 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference game.
