Women's Soccer Battles Salve Regina to Scoreless Draw in CCC Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday morning with a 0-0 double overtime draw with visiting Salve Regina University at Walter M. Katz Field. The tie moves the Colonels to 4-1-1 and 0-0-1 in the CCC while the Seahawks move to 1-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.

The first half ended scoreless with each team playing an even 45 minutes. Curry held a slight advantage in shots with seven while Salve Regina had four.  Both goalkeepers played solid between the pipes coming up with key saves.  The Colonels sophomore netminder Kristen Buzzotta (Lynnfield, Mass.) made four saves while the Seahawks' junior netminder Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made two. Salve Regina held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks but couldn't capitalize on them for a score.

Curry outshot the Seahawks 4-3 in the second half but neither team could find the back of the net.  The teams were even in corner kicks, each taking three. Cassandra Grasso (Wilmington, Mass.) had multiple quality shots on goal for the Colonels but none could get past Pala. Curry would have two chances late in regulation when a shot by Grasso went wide and then the Colonels had a corner kick but could not come up with any shot. The teams went into the first overtime with 0-0 showing on the board.

Salve Regina outshot Curry 1-0 in the first 10 minutes of sudden-death OT. The second overtime saw another evenly matched period. The Seahawks outshot the Colonels 2-1, but no shots found the net. Curry and Salve Regina fought for 110 minutes but neither could walk away with the win.  The horn sounded and the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

Buzzotta had nine saves in net for the Colonels.  For the Seahawks, Pala made four saves in goal.

Curry returns to action on Mon., Sept. 18 when they host Newbury College at 4:00 p.m.  Salve Regina travels to Bridgewater State on Tues., Sept. 19 in a 7:00 p.m. game start.
