Women's Soccer Advances to the CCC Tournament With a Thrilling 1-0 Overtime Win Against Western New England

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England, 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 13-5-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the CCC and advance to the conference tournament.  The Golden Bears fell to 4-13-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the CCC.

The 13 wins ties the program for the most victories since the 2006 season.

The teams battled each other to a scoreless first half.  Curry held a slight advantage in shots at 10-8.  The Colonels Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Colonels in shots while Alicia Lewis (Johnsonville, N.Y.) led for the Golden Bears.  Western New England goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) played for the first 9:22 but didn't see a shot.  Veilleux was replaced by Briana Kubik (Blandford, Mass.) who finished out the half and made five stops.  Curry's Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) was solid in goal stopping five shots.

The second half was played out similar to the first.  Curry led in shots at 9-7 landing six on net while Western New England had four.  Neither squad could find the back of the net for the game-winner so after 90 minutes they headed into overtime.

Just 1:45 into the first overtime the Golden Bears committed a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Lima was awarded the kick and struck the ball over the head of Kubik for the victory.

The Colonels finished with 20 shots and four corner kicks.  The Golden Bears finished with 15 shots and three corner kicks.

Stott made nine saves in net for the win.  Veilleux played in 9:22 minutes in net before giving way to Kubik who finished with 11 stops in the loss.

Curry advances to the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament which will be played on Saturday, October 31.  Opponent and time has yet to be determined.
