Women's Soccer Rolls Past Visiting Rhode Island College, 5-2

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team defeated Rhode Island College, 5-2, on Monday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 12-4 overall.  The 12th win surpasses the 11 wins Curry finished with in the 2014 season.  The Anchormen fell to 2-13 overall.

Despite the shots being even in the first half, RIC took the early lead and held 1-0 advantage into halftime.  Just 4:53 into the stanza Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) dribbled the ball past the Colonels defenders and netted her first on the night unassisted.  DeGrooth got inside the box and one-timed it past Curry's goaltender Christina Chiofalo (Smithtown, N.Y.).  The Colonels had some good chances to tie the match but solid play by the Anchormen's goalkeeper Katherine Haley (Hope, R.I.) held them scoreless.

The Colonels came out strong to start the second half.  With just 1:08 off the clock Curry's Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal to even out play at 1-1.  Parker collected a loose ball and sent it past the glove of Haley.  The Colonels kept the pressure on and took the lead when Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) assisted Korinna Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) on a through pass.  Tsonis extended Curry's lead after netting her second on the night when she scored unassisted.  RIC was quick to answer back and cut the lead back to one just two minutes later.  The Anchormen won the kick off after the Colonel goal.  They were able to keep possession of the ball in Curry's defensive end until Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, Conn.) struck the ball just outside the box over the head of Chiofalo.  The Colonels went on to net two more to insure the victory.  Lima scored an unassisted goal with 4:13 left to play followed by a Cassie Grasso (Wilmington, Mass.) tally just two minutes later.  Grasso received a pass from Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) for the helper.

The Colonels finished with 24 shots and four corner kicks.  The Anchormen had nine shots and three corners.

Chiofalo earned the win in net with three saves.  Haley took the loss in net for RIC coming up with nine stops.  Haley played in net for 86:29 minutes allowing four goals and making eight stops before giving way to Stefanie Togbasi             (Providence, R.I.) who made one save allowing one goal.

Curry returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Eastern Nazarene in a 4:00 p.m. game start.  RIC returns on Saturday, October 24 when they host Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut at 1:00 p.m.
