Women's Soccer Shuts Out Fitchburg State, 2-0

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team was in action this evening, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Colonels of Curry College in non-conference action at Elliot Field.

In the opening frame, Curry College and Fitchburg State combined for 26 total shots, including 13 on target. The Colonels best scoring opportunity of the half occurred with just under ten minutes to play as sophomore forward Amanda Crisulla headed a ball on target that Falcon keeper Morgan Steele was able to corral.

For Fitchburg State, freshman Maddie Medina and sophomore Whitney Mansfield had the Falcons best scoring chances, firing a pair of shots on frame that Curry goaltender Morgan Stott turned aside to preserve the 0-0 stalemate going into intermission.

Following the break, the Colonels grabbed the lead at the 51:59 mark when sophomore midfielder Cassandra Grasso settled a feed from freshman Shaelyn Breslin and deposited the ball into the right side of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Curry doubled its lead (2-0) in the 68th minute of play as sophomore forward Korinna Tsonis blasted a one timer inside the far post for her fifth tally on the season off an assist by senior Mary Blythe.

Throughout the contest, Curry outshot the Falcons 25-18, while also holding a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. In goal, Steele finished with a career best 11 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Stott stopped seven shots for the Colonels en-route to the clean sheet.

            Fitchburg State (2-4-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Nichols College at 4 p.m. Curry College (7-1-0, 1-1-0 TCCC) will host the Bison of Nichols College on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Fitchburg Sports Information)
