Women's Soccer Battles Western New England to a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Erica Parlavecchio knocked home the tying goal just over seven minutes into the second half to help the Western New England women's soccer team to a 1-1, double-overtime tie with visiting Curry College on Suprenant Field Saturday afternoon. The win lifted WNE's record to 6-8-4 overall and 3-3-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Curry fell to 11-6-1 overall and 1-6-1 in conference play.

Ashley Bottis put the Colonels ahead, 1-0 with a header at 9:16, off an assist by Kaitlyn Lima. It was the sixth goal of the season for Bottis.

That goal kick-started the Curry offense and only some strong play by the WNE defense kept the deficit at one goal. Defender Katelyn Cummings may have made the biggest save of the game when she cleared away a Colonel shot at an empty net after Golden Bear goalie Briana Kubik was out of position after making a save on a shot seconds earlier.

WNE took control to start the second half of play, leading to Parlavecchio's tally that came off a Golden Bear free kick. Taylor Mazurski was credited with the assist on the goal. After the score, the WNE offense continued to pressure behind Mazurski and junior Sarah Marois.

The teams played two scoreless overtime periods, with neither side able to get on the scoreboard again.

Curry outshot WNE 12-5, and Kubik came up big for the Golden Bears all afternoon, finishing with 11 saves. Morgan Stott finished with four saves for the visiting Colonels.

Western New England will close out the regular season on Wednesday with a 3:30 game at Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I.  Curry will host the University of New England on Tuesday at 4:00 in the Colonels final regular season match.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Western New England Sports Information)
