Women's Soccer Edges Visiting Newbury, 2-1

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Newbury College, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 7-3 overall while the Nighthawks fall to 2-5 on the season.

The Colonels controlled the entire first half outshooting the Nighthawks 19-3.  Curry struggled however to get on the board as they only landed eight on net.  Newbury's junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) was forced to make some tough stops to hold the Colonel's scoreless.  The Nighthawks had three chances to score but sophomore netminder Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) came up with all three saves.  Curry was awarded three corner kicks while Newbury had zero.

The Colonels opened up the scoring just eight minutes into the final frame.  Curry took two wide shots before they took a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) stuck one into the back of the net.  Lima maneuvered around two Nighthawk defenders and was right in front of the net for her lone tally of the night.  Over the next 13 minutes the Colonels kept possession of the ball in Newbury's defensive zone.  Curry had five attempts to extend their lead but four went just wide of the goal.  Newbury finally gained control of the ball and on their only shot of the half, tied the match at one apiece.  A long boot from a Nighthawk midfielder around the 50-yard line ended up through two Colonel defenders.  Junior Corrinn Niski (Oxford, Conn.) raced to collect the ball and was all alone against Stott before one-timing it to get her team on the board.  It wasn't until 8:48 left to play that Curry netted the game winner. Just a minute earlier, freshman Abigail Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) had a great chance to score but was unlucky as she hit the post.  It was junior Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) who earned the win for her team when she ripped one from the top of the 18-yard box over the head of Fox.

The Colonels held a 25-1 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes and a game total of 44-4.  Curry also lead in corner kicks 6-1.

Stott made three saves in net for her seventh win of the season.  Fox had an impressive 16 saves in the loss.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, October 4 when they travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Salve Regina in a 12:00 p.m. start.  Newbury hosts Wheelock College on Saturday, October 4 for a 1:30 p.m. start.
