Women's Soccer Extends Win Streak to Three Downing Green Mountain, 6-0

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Green Mountain, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 3-0 overall while the Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season.

Curry had five different goal scorers, three of them earning their first of the season.  Junior Kelsey O'Brien (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) led all scorers with four points. O'Brien had two goals while Lima had one and two assists.  O'Brien, sophomore Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) and freshman Korinna Tsonis (N. Dartmouth, Mass.) tallied their first on the year with Tsonis getting the first of her collegiate career.   Junior Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) had the Colonels other goal.

Despite outshooting Green Mountain 16-4 in the opening frame, Curry found the back of the net just twice. The Eagles junior goalkeeper Kim Simonetti (Salem, Mass.) was solid between the pipes making eight stops.  It wasn't until the 39:02 minute mark when the Colonels got on the board.  Lima sent a nice pass up the middle of the field to O'Brien who was able to take the ball alone and place it into right hand corner of the net.  With 3:34 left in the half, Tsonis drilled one over the head of Simonetti to head into break with a 2-0 lead.

Curry had 16 shots, 10 landing on net and four corners.  Green Mountain had four shots, all on net and one corner.  The Colonels sophomore netminder Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) had all four saves.

The Colonels took control of the final 45 minutes, scoring four more times.  Curry was able to use most of their bench which helped having fresh legs and energy on this hot day.  Green Mountain used their reserve players as well but with a smaller roster, the Eagles had a hard time keeping up with the Colonels.  The Eagles played hard but couldn't get the ball into their offensive zone.  Curry had another 16 shots with four resulting in scores.  Evans started the scoring spree after Lima sent a corner kick directly in front of the net.  Evans took a dive and got a piece of the ball which slipped past Simonetti.  Lima had an unassisted tally after making two nice moves around an Eagle defender for her lone in the game and third on the season.  Parker had a nice chance just inside the box but was taken down and awarded a penalty-kick.  Simonetti made a great diving save but Parker followed her own shot and collected the rebound which resulted in the team's fifth goal.  The Colonels weren't finished however as O'Brien netted her second with 2:11 left to play.  Freshman Samantha McGrath (Carver, Mass.) was credited with the assist.

Curry finished with 32 shots and nine corner kicks.  Green Mountain had five shots and one corner.

Stott earned her third win and shutout in net with four saves.  Simonetti took the loss in net for the Eagles coming up with an impressive 12 stops.

Curry returns to action on Tuesday, September 9 when they travel to Johnson State for a 4:00 p.m. game start.  Green Mountain travels to SUNY Canton on Wednesday, September 10 for a 5:00 p.m. game start.
